Create your Federal Student Aid ID

Both you and at least one parent should apply for a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, which will be used every year on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and on Master Promissory Notes (MPNs) for federal student loans. If you're a current student and have previously submitted the FAFSA, you should already have an FSA ID. You will use this ID each year.

 

Submit your FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to determine your eligibility for need-based federal and state financial aid. Duquesne's school code is 003258. It is important to use Duquesne's school code to direct your application to the University once you submit your FAFSA.

The deadline to submit your FAFSA is May 1.

FAFSA Requires FSA ID

The FAFSA uses you and your family's financial information to determine eligibility for need-based federal and state financial aid. Each contributor will need to fill out their part using their FSA ID (See Step 1).

New PA State Grant Application process

Students no longer need to start a separate application for the PA State Grant. Instead, Federal Student Aid (FSA) will send your information to Pennsylvania's new GrantUs system when you submit the FAFSA. You will receive an email from PHEAA to the address you provided on the FAFSA about your next steps to complete the application for the PA State Grant. Financial Aid Process

Once we receive a FAFSA, the student who submitted it will receive an email notification. The FAFSA traditionally opens Oct. 1.

 

Optional CSS Profile

The provides a more complete understanding of a family鈥檚 financial picture when awarding institutional need-based aid. Duquesne's CSS code is 2196 (cssprofile.collegeboard.org/). Families are encouraged to submit this in addition to the FAFSA in order to be considered for other University scholarships and grants. There is a fee to create a profile, but you may be eligible for the If your parents are divorced or separated, the Noncustodial Parent must complete a separate CSS Profile.

Undergraduate students living in the U.S. may submit CSS Profile for free if:

  • Family adjusted gross income is up to $100,000
  • The student qualified for an SAT fee waiver
  • The student is an orphan or ward of the court under the age of 24

Frequently Asked FAFSA Questions

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.

The Student Aid Index (SAI) replaced The Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The SAI is a calculation of how much financial aid may be awarded to meet the student's calculated need.
For families familiar with the FAFSA, you will now see the SAI instead of the EFC. Check out the Federal Student Aid Estimator to learn more about how much aid you may be eligible to receive.

The FAFSA Simplification is also introducing the term contributor - anyone who may be required to provide information on a student鈥檚 FAFSA form. Being a contributor does not imply responsibility for the student鈥檚 college costs. 

  • In the past, students and parents had to fill out the FAFSA together. Now each contributor will create their own   to complete their parts of the FAFSA. 
  • A dashboard will help keep everyone on track with email notices sent to contributors. All contributors need to complete their part within 45 days or the FAFSA will be cancelled. 

Any form of financial assistance you receive to help you pay for your education is considered financial aid and we are here to guide you through the process!

Admitted students will receive a comprehensive financial aid package that explains each student's financial aid and any scholarships received. We encourage you to have financial planning conversations with our admissions counselors or financial aid team during the college search process to prepare for financing your education.
