Biography
Ethan Murphy currently serves as the Assistant Professor for Choral Music Education at 51°µÍø in Pittsburgh, PA. He completed his Ph.D. in Music Education/Choral Conducting at Florida State University, his M.M. in Choral Conducting at the University of Minnesota, and his B.M. in Music Education from James Madison University.
At Duquesne, Dr. Murphy is responsible for the choral music education method sequence, teaching Vocal/Choral Methods, Advanced Vocal/Choral Methods, Voice for Music Education, and conducting the Pappert Chorale. His research interests include understanding the intersection between andragogy and pedagogy in music education, community music making, music perception and cognition, music teacher education, and inclusive teaching strategies and analytical techniques in choral music.
While at Florida State, Dr. Murphy served as an assistant conductor for the University Singers, Chamber Choir, and the Tallahassee Community Chorus. He also worked with preservice teachers in undergraduate conducting and choral methods. Additionally, Dr. Murphy served as an assistant conductor for the Festival Singers of Florida and conducted the premiere performance of DaSean Stokes’ Requiem for Knowledge Lost. As a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Murphy assisted the Campus Singers Maroon, Gospel Choir, and served as a rehearsal assistant for the Minnesota Chorale, the principal chorus for the Minnesota Orchestra.
In his early career, Dr. Murphy taught secondary choir and music theory in Prince William County, Virginia for six years. While teaching, Dr. Murphy developed a research interest in inclusive choral classrooms for multilingual learners. Before teaching, he served at JMU as an undergraduate manager for The Madison Singers, University Men’s Chorus, and the tenor-bass ensemble KOR. Additionally, Dr. Murphy was awarded the Outstanding Early Music Educator Award from JMU and the Spark Award from Prince William County Schools.
An active clinician, Dr. Murphy has adjudicated and conducted honor choirs in Virginia and Florida. He has also presented to numerous organizations and institutions, including the Florida Music Educators Association, the Florida chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, Minnesota Music Educators Association, Virginia Music Educators Association, the Minnesota Chorale, Shenandoah University, and Prince William County Schools, Virginia. He has also published an article for the National Collegiate Choral Organization’s The Choral Scholar and American Choral Review.
